For students
Terms for students
These terms are for students who take an AI New Zealand course through their school. Your school has a free School account with us. In these terms, "we" and "us" mean AI New Zealand Limited (company number 6343431, 16a Gazelle Ave, Beach Haven, Auckland 0626), and "you" means you, the student.
Please read them with our privacy statement, which explains what information we keep and who sees it.
1. The short version
- The course is free. You pay nothing and your school pays nothing.
- Do your own work. Use AI tools only where the course says you can.
- A member of staff at your school who has passed the course decides your final assessment. A person always decides, never software.
- Your school sees your progress and your result. It does not see your answers.
- We never sell your information, never send you marketing, never name you publicly, and never use your answers to train AI.
- Your certificate is yours, even after you leave school.
2. Who these terms are for
2.1 You are taking the course through your school. Your school chose to offer it and has agreed to you taking it.
2.2 The course is written for people in work, and suits senior students best. It is not part of NCEA and does not give you NCEA credits.
2.3 Your school has its own rules too, such as its rules on using AI. Follow them as well as these terms.
2.4 Teachers and other school staff take the course under our terms of sale and use, not these terms.
3. Your account
3.1 You sign in with your school email address. We email you an 8-digit code each time. There is no password, and we never send sign-in links.
3.2 Your account is just for you. Do not share it, and do not let anyone else sign in as you.
3.3 Use your real name. It is the name we put on your certificate.
3.4 If you think someone else has used your account, tell us straight away.
4. The course
4.1 The course has short lessons, quizzes and practical exercises, and ends with a final assessment.
4.2 You need every quiz answer right to move on. You see which answers are right, and you can try again as many times as you need.
4.3 Practical exercises get feedback written by AI. It is always labelled as AI feedback. It is practice notes, not a mark, and it does not decide anything. If it looks wrong, ask your teacher or us.
4.4 A teacher may run the course with a group. A group does not lead to a certificate. To get the certificate, you take the full course yourself.
5. Your final assessment
5.1 You write your answers yourself, about your own experience.
5.2 An assessor at your school reads your work and decides your result. They are a member of staff your school has chosen, and they have passed this course themselves. Our tools may prepare notes for them, but a person makes every decision. They only see your final assessment, not anything else you wrote in the course.
5.3 If your school has its own AI guidelines, your assessor also checks your work against them. They never fail you on their own.
5.4 There are three possible results:
- Passed. We issue your certificate.
- Revision requested. Your assessor names one thing to improve. You change that part and send it again.
- Re-sit requested. You take the assessment again (5.6).
Your school aims to give you your result within 10 working days, outside school holidays.
5.5 If you get a revision or re-sit result, you can use "Query this result" once for that attempt. A different assessor then looks at your work again. That is another assessor at your school, or AI New Zealand if your school has no one else.
5.6 A re-sit opens 7 days after you are told you need one, and you must start it within 30 days. It uses a new scenario. You can have up to two re-sits, and they are free.
5.7 If you need help to take the course or the assessment, such as more time or a different format, tell your teacher or email us before you start the final assessment.
6. Your certificate
6.1 You get the same certificate as everyone who passes the course. AI New Zealand issues it, and it says an assessor at your school passed your final assessment. It is a certificate of completion. It is not a qualification, it is not part of NCEA, and it gives no credits.
6.2 Your certificate is valid for 18 months. After that it shows as expired.
6.3 Anyone with your name and your certificate's code can check it at certify.newzealand.ai/verify. The check never shows your answers or any scores.
6.4 You can share your certificate, post it online and add it to LinkedIn. Do not change it or describe it as something it is not.
7. Doing the right thing
7.1 Your own work. Everything you send for assessment must be your own thinking. Nobody else may do any part of the course or the assessment for you.
7.2 AI tools. Use AI tools only where the course or an exercise says you can, and only in the way it says. If you are not sure, ask before you send your work.
7.3 Keep it fair. Do not share the assessment scenarios or your answers with other students, and do not use anyone else's answers.
7.4 Keep it safe. Do not write anything harmful or offensive. Do not put other people's personal information in your answers.
7.5 Respect the platform. Do not try to get around its security or look at other people's information.
7.6 If you break these rules in a serious way, we may pause your access, and we will tell your school that we have. We may also decline or take back a certificate (section 10).
8. Your information
8.1 From you, we collect only your name, your school email address and your work on the course. We do not ask for your date of birth, home address, phone number or National Student Number.
8.2 Your school can see:
- your name and school email;
- that you are a student;
- the course and the date you started;
- how far you have got, section by section;
- the date you finished, your result and your certificate date.
Your result shows to your school two working days after we tell you.
8.3 Your school cannot see your answers, your practical exercise work, your private notes, your feedback or your assessor's comments. The one exception is your assessor, who reads your final assessment to decide it.
8.4 Your information is stored in Sydney, Australia. We use Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, to write practice feedback and to prepare notes for your assessor. We send it your work without your name or email address. Some of this processing happens in the United States. We never use your answers to train any AI model, and we never use them as examples for our assessors.
8.5 We keep your assessment answers for 24 months after your result, then delete the text. We keep certificate records for 7 years, so certificates can still be checked.
8.6 We never send you marketing, and we never sell your information. We never name you or show your work publicly.
8.7 You can ask to see or correct the information we hold about you at any time. Email privacy@newzealand.ai.
9. If you or someone else may be at risk
9.1 If something you write suggests that you or someone else may be at risk of harm, our system flags it and a person at AI New Zealand reads it.
9.2 If we think someone's safety or wellbeing is at risk, we tell your school's safeguarding contact. That is a person your school names, such as your principal or guidance counsellor. If someone's life or safety is in serious and immediate danger, we may contact emergency services.
9.3 We are not a counselling service. If you need to talk to someone now, talk to an adult you trust, or free call or text 1737 any time.
10. Declining or taking back a certificate
10.1 We may decline to issue a certificate, or take one back, if we reasonably decide that:
- the work was not your own, or someone else did the assessment for you;
- you broke section 7 in a serious way; or
- the certificate was issued by mistake.
10.2 Before we decide, we tell you what we found and give you at least 10 working days to reply. The only exception is clear evidence of cheating: then we may act first and give you the chance to reply after, and we will put things right if we got it wrong. A person decides, and we give you the reasons in writing.
10.3 We never decline or take back a certificate just because software suggests that AI wrote the work. A person always looks at the evidence.
10.4 If we take back a certificate, the check page shows it as revoked. We tell your school, but we do not tell them why unless you agree or the law requires it.
11. Our course and your answers
11.1 The course, its videos, scenarios and assessments, and the platform belong to us or the people who license them to us. You can use them for your own learning. Do not copy, record, publish, sell or share them, except for short notes for yourself. Do not use them, or put them into an AI tool, to make your own course, training, assessment or platform, and do not copy or try to reproduce the platform or how it works.
11.2 Your answers belong to you. You let us store, copy and process them, mark them and give feedback on them. We may use the service providers named in our privacy statement to do this. We keep your answers only for as long as our privacy statement says. This permission is free, and you can still use your answers however you like.
12. Leaving school, or if things end
12.1 Your account and your certificate stay yours when you leave school. Your school email may stop working, so download your certificate and keep its check link. If you need to sign in after you leave, email us and we will help.
12.2 If your school or AI New Zealand stops offering the course, you can still finish a course you have already started.
12.3 You can stop the course at any time. To close your account, or to ask us to delete your information, email privacy@newzealand.ai.
12.4 We may pause or close your account if you break these terms in a serious or repeated way. We will tell you why first, unless that would be against the law or put someone at risk.
13. Our responsibility
13.1 The course is free. We take care to get it right, but it is general education about using AI. It is not legal or other professional advice.
13.2 Nothing in these terms takes away any rights you have under New Zealand law, including the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and the Fair Trading Act 1986.
13.3 As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for loss that we could not reasonably have expected, or that is caused by things outside our control.
14. Emails and accepting these terms
14.1 We email you sign-in codes, your results and messages about your course. These are not marketing. You agree to get these from us by email.
14.2 Ticking the box before you start is how you accept these terms. We record when you did and which version you accepted.
15. Questions and complaints
15.1 Ask your teacher, or email hello@newzealand.ai. We reply within 10 working days.
15.2 If we cannot sort out a complaint together, you can take it to the Disputes Tribunal. Privacy complaints can go to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
16. Changes to these terms
16.1 We may change these terms. If a change is worse for you, it does not apply to a course you have already started, unless the law requires it. We will email you about any change that affects a course you have started.
17. General
17.1 These terms are governed by New Zealand law.
17.2 If any part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
